From Leadership Insight to a Thirty Day Experiment

Recognizing a leadership pattern can feel like progress. You understand why you overcommit, where you become defensive, or how your involvement slows a decision. The next challenge is creating a different experience during an ordinary working week.

A thirty day experiment gives insight a practical destination. It creates enough structure to try a new behavior, observe its effects, and decide what to adjust.

Within Fully Powered™ Leadership, I encourage microshifts because a specific change is easier to practice and evaluate than a broad promise to become a better leader.

Choose one situation you can recognize

Start with a recurring moment. Perhaps you accept requests before checking capacity, answer a question before the employee has considered options, or revise work that already meets the agreed standard.

Describe the behavior clearly. “I will be less controlling” is difficult to observe. “During our weekly project review, I will ask the employee to explain their recommendation before offering mine” gives you something concrete to practice.

Choose an experiment appropriate to the risk. Required oversight and safety standards remain part of the agreement.

Connect the shift to the pattern

Consider which Power Leak™ may be involved. Are you seeking reassurance through extra checking, preserving approval by saying yes, or proving your value by solving everything?

Then anticipate the tension. What might you feel when you respond differently? What reminder or preparation could help you keep the agreement?

For an overcommitment pattern, the microshift might be telling colleagues you will confirm capacity before accepting a new request. The practical support could be a current priorities list and an agreed process for discussing tradeoffs.

Gather feedback beyond your own impression

Define what you want to learn. You might track whether fewer requests require renegotiation, whether employees understand their decision authority, or whether one recurring approval delay becomes shorter.

Ask the people affected for feedback. Has your new approach made expectations clearer? Have you stepped back appropriately, or left a gap in support? Their experience helps you distinguish an effective change from one that merely feels different to you.

Review and choose the next step

At the end of thirty days, examine when the behavior was useful, where you returned to the familiar response, and what the work actually required. Keep the parts that helped and adjust what did not.

You may need clearer boundaries, more practice, or a process change alongside your personal commitment. An experiment should help reveal that information.

Choose one recurring situation this week and write a small agreement with yourself. Specify the action, the support, and the review date. Leadership insight gains practical value when it begins changing what people experience while working with you.
