You can have years of leadership experience, an impressive title, and a proven track record of success—and still give away your power without realizing it.
It happens in everyday moments.
You avoid a difficult conversation because you don’t want to disappoint someone.
You say yes when you know you should say no.
You second-guess a decision you’ve already made.
You take responsibility for problems that aren’t yours to solve.
Individually, these behaviors may seem insignificant.
Collectively, they can weaken your confidence, authority, and effectiveness.
I call these patterns Power Leaks™.
What Are Power Leaks™?
Power Leaks™ are conscious or unconscious patterns through which leaders give away, surrender, or diminish their personal power.
They often emerge from learned beliefs, emotional responses, and protective behaviors developed over time.
For example, a leader who learned that disagreement creates conflict may avoid expressing an unpopular opinion.
Another leader who associates being valued with being helpful may struggle to delegate responsibilities.
These patterns may have served a protective purpose in the past.
But in leadership, they can become costly.
The Nervous System Connection
Our nervous systems are constantly responding to our experiences.
When a situation feels threatening, even socially or emotionally, we may experience automatic stress responses.
For some leaders, this looks like confrontation or defensiveness.
For others, it looks like withdrawing, freezing, or attempting to keep everyone happy.
Consider a leader who struggles to establish boundaries.
Logically, they understand that saying no is sometimes necessary.
But emotionally, saying no may trigger discomfort, guilt, or fear of rejection.
Their nervous system may interpret the situation as threatening, even when setting a reasonable boundary is appropriate.
Without awareness, the leader may repeatedly choose short-term emotional relief over long-term leadership effectiveness.
Three Common Leadership Power Leaks™
- People-Pleasing
You prioritize approval over making the decision that best serves your team.
- Overfunctioning
You take on responsibilities that others are capable of handling, unintentionally limiting their growth and increasing your workload.
- Second-Guessing
You repeatedly question your judgment, delay decisions, or seek excessive reassurance.
These patterns can affect far more than your personal confidence.
They influence team accountability, trust, communication, and organizational performance.
How to Begin Reclaiming Your Power
Start by identifying situations where your actions don’t align with your intentions.
Ask yourself:
“Where am I saying yes when I want to say no?”
“Where am I taking responsibility for something that belongs to someone else?”
“Where am I allowing fear of disapproval to influence my decisions?”
Awareness creates an opportunity for choice.
From there, leaders can begin practicing new behaviors that reinforce healthy boundaries, confident communication, and personal authority.

When leaders recognize their Power Leaks™, they can begin shifting from automatic protective patterns toward intentional leadership.
